MAR {l* OOUNOTL SUBJECT: Recommended approval o D*ePlf-tli: Pub 1 i Event f r c *;pi{ Director position. o{fl ous( The present Myriad construction schedule indicates that the building will go into service on or about March l, L972. The management work during the final year of construction is very difficult and time consuming because a wide variety of equi-pment must be purchased, the organization and budgeting must be prepared, the sales and promotion efforts must be greatly increased and the complicated finish stages of construction must be coordinated. In Oklahoma City this is accomplished by the Public Events Director and this work requires a great deal of detailed evaluation, public appearances and meetings, time spent at the construction site and travel to promote and se11. Addit.ionally, in Oklahoma City, the Public Events Director supervises the operation of the Fairgrounds and Civic Center Musj-c HaII. It is becoming a coilrmon practice in many cities which are building a major multi-purpose convention, entertainment and sports complex, to hire an assistant managier at least one year prior to the opening of the building to assist with the great amount of detailed work involved. With this in mind it is recommended that the Council approve the creation of the position of Deputy Public Events Director. It is envisioned that this person will serve as the assistant manager of the Myriad and will be involved heavily in the final Myriad preparations and will also handle many of the detailed problems stemming from the operation of the Fairgrounds and the Civic Center Music Ha1l. a l Council Memo No. 403-71 Page 2 3-t6-7L It is anticipated Lhat the Fairgrounds Arena manager will be appointed to this position if approved. The Fairgrounds manager is presently in salary range 230 ($980 to $11185). It is further recommended that the pay range for the Deputy Public Events Director position be set at range 332. This range is presently occupied by the Planner III, the assistant water director and the assistant airport director. The salary for the range is $1,070 to $1,390. Finally, it is recommended that this position be effective April l, L97L. The above will greatly assist the development and operation of Oklahoma Cityrs new Myriad. Respec lly submitted, .
